Dende Cuadonga al mar, Asturies brilla
The Battle of Covadonga (722) — where Pelayo defeated the Moors — launched the Reconquista. For 770 years, Christian kingdoms reclaimed Iberia from this Asturian mountain. Every nation has a founding myth; Spain's is literal, and it started here in Asturies.
Asturias produces 80% of Spain's cider — 80M liters annually. The ritual escanciar (pouring from height) aerates cider for perfect taste. Gijón's cider mile (200+ sidrerías) and Nava's Cider Museum celebrate 2,000 years of tradition. Each pour is a performance.
Picos de Europa (1918) was Spain's first national park. 2,648m peaks, Cares Gorge, and Lakes of Covadonga create dramatic landscapes. Cantabrian bears, wolves, and golden eagles thrive. This limestone massif is the crown jewel of Atlantic Spain.
Asturian Pre-Romanesque architecture (8th–10th c.) is unique worldwide. Santa María del Naranco, San Miguel de Lillo, and San Julián de los Prados — UNESCO-listed since 1985 — bridge Visigothic and Romanesque. These 1,200-year-old churches invented European architectural forms.
The Princess of Asturias Awards, Spain's Nobel equivalent since 1981, recognize global excellence in arts, science, and peace. Laureates include Nelson Mandela, Bob Dylan, and Wikipedia. Oviedo's Campoamor Theatre hosts this annual celebration of human achievement.
Cabrales cheese, aged in Picos de Europa limestone caves for 2–5 months, is Spain's most famous blue cheese. DOP-protected since 1981. Made from raw cow/goat/sheep milk, each wheel reflects its unique cave microclimate. Asturian fabada bean stew completes this gastronomic heritage.
