From the ashes of removal, a phoenix nation of 466,000 citizens rises
In 1821, Sequoyah completed the Cherokee syllabary — 85 characters representing every syllable in spoken Cherokee. He is the only individual in recorded history to independently create a complete writing system. Within years, the Cherokee literacy rate surpassed that of surrounding settlers.
With over 466,000 enrolled citizens, the Cherokee Nation is the largest tribal nation in the United States. Headquartered in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, it governs a 14-county reservation generating $3.1 billion in annual economic impact.
In 1838, 16,000 Cherokee were forced from their ancestral lands. Over 4,000 perished on the Trail of Tears. From this devastation, the Cherokee rebuilt — adopting a constitution on September 6, 1839, and forging the most powerful tribal sovereignty in North America.
Cherokee Nation Entertainment operates casinos and resorts across Oklahoma, including partnerships with Caesars Entertainment. Cherokee Nation Businesses has contributed over $1.2 billion to the tribe in the past decade, with gaming compact fees exceeding $500 million to the state.
The Cherokee Nation operates immersion schools where children learn entirely in Cherokee. Cherokee keyboards are built into iOS and Android. The Cherokee Phoenix newspaper has published in the syllabary nearly continuously since 1828 — the first Native American newspaper.
Cherokee soldiers of the 30th Infantry Division transmitted secret messages in Cherokee during the Second Battle of the Somme in 1918 — the first-ever use of Native language code talking in combat, inspiring the famous Navajo Code Talkers of WWII. Honored with a Congressional Gold Medal in 2013.
