Machu Picchu — Lost City of the Incas

Built around 1450 by Inca emperor Pachacuti at 2,430m, Machu Picchu was never found by Spanish conquistadors. Rediscovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Its precision stonework, astronomical alignments, and mountain setting make it humanity's most spectacular archaeological site.

🧶

Quipu — Knotted Computing

The Incas created quipus — intricate knotted string devices that recorded numerical data, census records, and possibly narratives. Without a written alphabet, the Inca Empire of 12 million people was administered through these "talking knots." Over 900 quipus survive in museums. Researchers are still decoding them — the Inca may have invented a 3D writing system.

📚

Runasimi — 8 Million Speakers

Quechua (Runasimi, "people's language") is the most widely spoken Indigenous language in the Americas with 8-10 million speakers across Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, and Argentina. It's an official language of Peru and Bolivia. Words like "condor," "puma," "quinoa," and "jerky" (ch'arki) entered global vocabulary from Runasimi.

🌾

Quinoa & Potato — Gifts to the World

Peru domesticated the potato — over 3,800 varieties exist, feeding billions worldwide. Quinoa, the "mother grain" of the Incas, is now a global superfood. Peru also gave the world tomatoes, peppers, and over 55 varieties of corn. Inca agricultural terraces (andenes) at Moray were essentially agricultural laboratories — the world's first experimental farms.

🏰

Tawantinsuyu — The Four Quarters

The Inca Empire (1438-1533) stretched 4,000km from Colombia to Chile — the largest empire in pre-Columbian Americas. Connected by 40,000km of roads (Qhapaq Ñan, a UNESCO site), governed without currency or markets, and built with stones fitted so precisely that no mortar was needed. The Inca created one of history's most remarkable civilizations.

🎶

Andean Music — Panpipes & Soul

The haunting sounds of the quena (flute), zampoña (panpipes), and charango (small guitar) define Andean music. "El Cóndor Pasa," composed in 1913, became a global hit through Simon & Garfunkel. Andean music traditions stretch back thousands of years. Every festival in the highlands features musicians whose melodies carry the voice of the mountains themselves.

💰

Trade Partnership — Mining & Commerce

Korea is a major investor in Peru's mining sector. Korean companies participate in copper and zinc extraction — Peru is the world's 2nd largest copper producer. Bilateral trade exceeds $3 billion. Korean vehicles (Hyundai, Kia) dominate Lima's streets. Peru's rich mineral resources align perfectly with Korea's manufacturing needs.

🤝

Cultural Bridge — K-Wave in the Andes

K-pop has a massive following in Peru — BTS fan events fill Lima stadiums. Korean restaurants thrive in Miraflores. Meanwhile, Peruvian cuisine (ceviche, lomo saltado) gains Korean fans. Over 1,500 Korean nationals live in Peru. Both cultures share deep respect for ancestors, family bonds, and agricultural traditions stretching back millennia.
