Maalol a wot.
I want to start with the best aspects of this hostel, mentioning factors beyond its control. 1) The location is excellent. It takes around 15 minutes to walk from Fortitude Valley, the heart of Brisbane. Additionally, it is just 3 minutes from the Central train station. 2) The staff members, like all Australians, are very welcoming. 3) The pods are exceptionally clean. The bedsheets, pillowcases, and walls are well-maintained. The showers have been renovated and are quite impressive. As a hostel, many guests utilize the facilities throughout the day. On the basement level, the showers functioned effectively. Maintenance staff are available to address issues, such as a non-working lightbulb. 4) The reception operates 24/7. A staff member monitors who enters the hostel after 10 PM. A key card is necessary for entry. Remember your room number. 5) Lockers are available in the basement. You must bring your own padlock. I suggest bringing one from your home country. You can secure your belongings. However, I believe no one would steal your items if left in the bedrooms - the room I occupied had 8 pods. Initially, there were about 10. 6) Let's discuss a specific situation. In L2G, the basement, if you are assigned that room in August 2025, you might want to request a room change. There is one individual (older, tattooed, large) who snores loudly. I arrived at the hostel around 3 PM, and he was snoring from that time, even at 5 PM, and later at 10 PM, all the way to 8 AM when he woke up for breakfast. I requested a room change at 5 PM that day, and the staff kindly informed me to check out at 11 AM the next day for a new, better room. It was a challenging night due to his snoring. He is a long-term guest. I doubt anyone could endure that. 7) The following day, I received a new room. The occupants were Chinese/Korean, along with a friendly French woman who spoke a lot of French. She was asked to keep quiet at 10 PM when lights were off, encouraging everyone to remain quiet. Room 201 is very nice. The setup is modern. Room L2G was older and had more long-term guests. Request a change if you find yourself in that room, in my opinion. 8) You can charge your devices before the pods. An Australian converter plug is essential. Purchase it from AliExpress before your arrival, as it will be pricier in Australia. I also exchanged cash in my home country since the rates were better than at airports and stores. 9) Breakfast was served from 8 AM to 10 AM. Excellent offerings. They provided corn flakes, muesli, various types of store-bought milk, orange juice/apple juice, toast, spreads, and delicious yogurt in a large bowl, along with cut mango to add on top. Utensils and cups/dishes are available. It is mandatory to wash your own dishes at the sinks afterward and dry them, or you will incur a fine. Everyone is friendly. You can dine in several areas - a couch area, outside tables, or the lower level with a workout area and numerous couches. I enjoyed the vegemite toast, yogurt, juices, and cereal. All the food is high-quality store-bought, making it a great way to fill up in the morning. On the last day, I brought food from a cafe, like meat pie, which is an Australian specialty. 10) Showers and restrooms are shared. I had my shoes in the room. I recommend bringing sandals too. I believe the staff provides them. Please bring your own toothbrush/toothpaste. If you forget, a small fee of 7 dollars applies. They offer washing machines/dryers for 7 dollars, and 6 dollars to dry. There is a touch screen. Free iron. The shared living room/kitchen area opens at 6 AM, allowing access to milk, dining area, and plates, etc. It closes at 10 PM. If you wish to use your laptop or eat somewhere, a small table is available beside the locker area. Some fire prevention doors must remain closed at all times during the night. 11) Many young backpackers are present. I spoke with a French guy and a British guy.
Aroa Brisbane Quarters.
I must express that as I exited the door after my stay, I felt completely satisfied, like 10/10. After my third visit over the past few years, it feels wonderful to still have such positive feelings about this place. The decor and layout impressed me during my first visit - from the swimming pool to the gym - and none of that has faded. This time, I was struck by how exceptionally well-managed this place is. Initially, I was a bit concerned as they have tightened the rules over the past year since my last visit. While a 10 PM curfew for a place primarily frequented by travelers in their 20s seems somewhat quaint and is now enforced more strictly, I cannot deny that this discipline helps maintain order. Thankfully, BQ has never been a 'party hostel,' and the travelers who stay here are generally well-mannered and respectful, so I doubt easing the rules would lead to chaos. Ultimately, if this is the small price to pay for a well-run, comfortable, and pleasant 'flashpackers' experience, I would prefer that. The kitchen and dining areas resemble a train station in the morning, and it is a testament to BQ's excellent management that the staff can run the complimentary breakfast smoothly. The staff is generally friendly and very helpful. In my opinion, rating a place is akin to evaluating a movie; I assess it based on emotional impact. Despite a few minor issues - the blocked right-hand sink in the men's bathroom on the first floor remains blocked after a year, the left-hand shower only provides lukewarm water, my mattress in pod #1 in the 18-bed pod room is sunken in the middle and may need replacing, and the paint on the handrail leading to my pod was chipped - none of these detracted from my overall satisfaction as I departed. The positives significantly outweigh these minor negatives, and the overall experience remains comfortable and enjoyable. I nearly chose a nearby hotel, which is more expensive, but ultimately decided that being around many people is more appealing than the relative isolation of a hotel room as a solo traveler. From my experience, such privacy can lead to loneliness, and the sense of community at a place like BQ is invaluable. The decor and facilities are so comfortable that not having your own room is inconsequential, and the pod room is truly nice, quiet, and cozy. I stayed in my own room at Coolangatta YHA before this, and at both locations, it was a pleasure to hear the accents of and interact with German, French, Spanish, British, Irish, Slavic, Japanese, Chinese, and fellow Australian guests, among others. I have had wonderful experiences over the years at hostels, meeting and connecting with people from around the world, and this joy is something you cannot find in hotels and is priceless. Thank you, Brisbane Quarters, for another fantastic stay!
